Personal Style – Who Are You?

I think my sense of style has developed multiple personality disorder. Do you ever feel like this? Like you can pick an item from your closet and immediately tell which version of your fashion self would wear it? Just look at the example above. I could definitely wear every single item, and it would still look like me (although in this case it looks more like Zooey Deschanel, naturally). The problem is, I could also wear this without a second thought:

You’re probably thinking “but those aren’t that much different! It’s the same quirky attention to details, the hint of nerdiness, the unusual combinations of fabrics/patterns/colours.” And yes, they’re not very different, but still, one is definitely cute and feminine, whereas the other is tougher, simpler and leaning more towards menswear.

So far it’s not so bad. Although the two “personalities” are different, they’re still compatible, in a way. I’m sure one of them could find something to wear in the other one’s closet without compromising her personal preferences. But then – enter this girl:

What have we here? Heels, bows, draped things, red lipstick, a Mulberry Alexa? This is a very different girl – or should I say woman? I think the key word here is elegant, which I wouldn’t use to describe the two first girls. Luxurious fabrics are important, too, and something whispers “quality”. I’m sure my Parisian self wouldn’t feel good in grungy boots or orange lipstick.

K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple Stupid. This is the persona that’s been causing me the most problems lately. It’s all about simple, graphic items with focus on the silhouette and good quality fabrics. It’s not very flashy or busy, but it’s bold. I blame blogs such as Kingdom of Style or Nubbytwiglet, who combine passion for graphic design and typography with a fantastic sense of fashion.

How, then, am I supposed to combine these four rather different people? Especially with my closet in mind – it’s like the four different personas are battling for territory, but nobody is winning, thus leaving me with four very small and completely different wardrobes. How can I bring peace to my wardrobe without having to kill someone? (There are enough skeletons in my closet as it is.)

Outfit Dilemma – Help!

Outfit: the BASE

Tomorrow night my band is playing again. I’ve decided to wear all the things you see above, but I can’t for the life of me choose the rest of the accessories. I’ve put together three variations in Polyvore, tracking down images of items I actually own to make it as realistic as possible (the nail polishes aren’t the exact ones I’ve got, but you get the idea). I know this is rather at the last minute, but if anyone has any opinions I would be very grateful indeed!

Styling the Topshop Dress

Stomp

While I’m waiting for my perfect Topshop dress to arrive, my sister Cookie suggested I do some Polyvore’s on different ways to style it. Well, voilà! The only problem now is that I want so many of the pretty things I found… You can click the collages to see where you can buy them (or you can spare your credit card and resist – your choice).

This first one was inspired by a tough city girl. I’m really in love with the combination of a pale grey and dark golds, especially if you throw some brown into the mix. A black, slightly transparent sweater underneath the dress will toughen it up so it’s not so girly-girly. Lots of dark eye makeup required, of course.

Pastels

I normally don’t do pink, but these tights looked so bright and seemed to have something of an attitude (yes, of course clothes have personalities, I’m not crazy). The crimped hair, weird eyelashes and headband keep it fun, but the heels and the bracelet make sure it’s a little elegant as well. I wish I could wear this while sitting on a bench in Paris, eating macaroons in pastel colours.

Pale and Windy

Did anyone say The Edge of Love? So did I, I’ll admit. It’s as if this elegant lady from the 40s ran away to a beach house, where she found some old menswear pieces (the vest, the hat) and paired them with her own, glamorous pieces. She doesn’t care about mixing metals or not wearing lipstick, but her hair is always perfect. Can I be her for a week or two?

Juliet?

I made this one with Lykke Li’s song Possibility on repeat, and Romeo + Juliet in my mind. It’s a complete pattern-detail-overload, but it’s still my favourite outfit combination. If only I could walk around with a tulle veil on my head and a serene expression all the time! That peacock bag wouldn’t hurt, either, come to think of it.

Christmas Calendar: “Love And Other Disasters”

I’m having some trouble sleeping nowadays, which means I spend most of my nights watching movies instead. A few days ago I saw “Girl, Interrupted“, and was pleasantly surprised. Not only is Winona Ryder wonderful as always, but to my delight I discovered that Brittany Murphy was in it too. I loved her in “Sin City” and “Spun“; she possesses that rare combination of being some sweet little thing and being rather insane, just like Christina Ricci (another favourite of mine).

After having rediscovered Brittany Murphy I did some research on IMDb, and learned that she plays the lead in a movie called “Love and other disasters“, which looked like a mainstream romantic comedy. I watched it last night, and yes, to some extent it is very mainstream and predictable, but I found that I liked this much better than, say, He’s Just Not That Into You. Perhaps it’s because it’s a British production, or maybe because it’s sort of a metafilm (you know, a film discussing films). But I think the main reason might be Brittany Murphy.

In the movie she is charming and adorable (though not sickeningly so), has a very interesting wardrobe (except for a horrible yellow-tunic-and-cropped-tights-thing which we won’t get into), and her Holly Golightly-inspired fringe is styled in so many different ways I was very impressed with the movie’s hair stylist. You’ll just have to see it to understand what I mean, but I am seriously considering getting a fringe like hers cut and then watching the movie again while making notes of all the ways hers is styled.

And just because I have this crazy girl-crush on Brittany Murphy right now, I made some Polyvore-outfits based on some photos of her, as you might be getting a little bored with my attempts at being a photographer ;)
