Last Night

I tend to fall completely and utterly head over heels in love with some movies. I loved Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind so much that I named my blog after them. I watch the former one at least once every other month.
It has been a long time since LiT has seen some healthy competition, but I’ve now watched Last Night pretty much once a day since I discovered it a week ago. Sometimes I’ll put it on in the background while I get dressed for the day, or while I fall asleep.
What makes it such a mesmerizing movie, you might ask? Well, I’m not completely sure, although it does share quite a lot of traits with LiT, so that explains something, I guess.
It’s very quiet. You learn the story of a couple, and how they choose to spend one of their nights apart. There is no rapid dialogue, no car chases, no things blowing up.
Keira Knightley is quite ordinary, but still exquisite. I desperately want her hair in this movie.
The soundtrack is lovely, and although I’ve searched for it everywhere, I haven’t been able to track it down so I can buy it. I put the ones that are on Spotify in this playlist, though.
Knightley’s acting is wonderful, I find her character so utterly believable. Sometimes I think she looks a bit like Cookie, too.
I’m afraid couldn’t stop myself, so there are plenty more screenshots (that I’ve played with in PhotoShop) below. I’ve tried not to give away too much of the story, so you can watch it yourself. Because you should. Maria-recommended, an’ all that.
It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like quiet movies, or ones by Sofia Coppola, give it a go. I intend to do just that once I’ve published this post.
PS: How much wouldn’t I give to have a guy look at me like that (see below)? It feels a bit silly to admit it, but it’s true.

I absolutely adore Keira Knightley, so this is definitely a movie I will have to watch! And as horrible as this is going to sound; I still haven’t watched Lost in Translation OR Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so I guess I need to schedule some time to watch all three!:)
Darling, get thee to a dvd place asap, you’re missing out!
Confession: I’ve never watched LiT and ESotSM. Shocking, I know (don’t look at me like that!) It’s just that I never could find them in stores…
But seeing how inspired you are by those movies…I’ll be giving them top priority on my To-Watch movie list ^_^ Last Night too of course. These screen shots have quite a nuanced sensuality about them that is rather surreal…
Btw, I’m curious: what DID you do to them in Photoshop…?
*laughs* I actually DID make a face when I read that you’re a LiT/ESotSP-virgin
I’ll admit LiT isn’t everyone’s cup of tea – Cookie, for instance, doesn’t understand my fondness for it, although she’s definitely given it a fair chance. Still, I think they’re worth a try!
About the photoshopping, I mainly combined two or more screenshots in various ways to make each of the pictures above. The bottom one with the gorgeous French guy is the only one that’s exactly like what you can see in the movie. I just didn’t want to give away too much of the movie, so I tried to make the pictures a bit less straightforward.
EEEH! More movies to watch this week! (Exams? What exams?)
I adore Keira Knightley as she is one of my favourite actors. And judging by the screenshots you provided, I will NOT spend half the film distracted by a strong urge to shove a sandwich down her throat! Beautiful woman and an amazing actor, but she can occasionally cross the line between “Willowy” and “Eat a Freaking Muffin!”
I have had “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” on my watch-list for months! Pesky education getting in the way of movies…
I always love reading your posts Maria, until next time!
First: good luck on your exams! This is the second Christmas without them for me, and I don’t miss them one bit. Well, actually, that wonderful feeling when they’re OVER is kind of great…
I definitely understand what you mean about Knightley, but this film was mostly free of those kinds of distractions (for me, that sensational hair did most of the distraction this time!).
And thank you, darling, it means so much to me that you’re all so supportive, even when I don’t post as much or as regularly as I’d like <3
Am almost sad that I probably wont have a proper opportunity to watch these movies (yes, I have not watched any of them! Must be rectified!) until mid-January! Maybe if I work very focused and concentrated on my exam essays I’ll manage to make space, but sadly that rarely happens. Sigh! Love the screen shots, they look gorgeous, even if I’m very curious as how much photoshopping you did, haha.
Good luck on your exams, Annette, I’m sure all that work will be worth it! And then you can celebrate with three excellent movies
The photoshopping wasn’t very complicated, I mostly just put two screenshots together in various ways. I must have taken about 200 screenshots originally – I tend to do that when a movie is filmed so beautifully – but I couldn’t very well show you THAT many, now, could I? This way, I could still post quite a lot of screenshots, but hopefully without you guys falling asleep halfway through them.
